If, like many people, you have the ambition to start your own online business and make money online, then you need to be aware of just how important it is to find the right product or service to promote. Get this wrong and your fledgling internet empire can be doomed from the outset. Get it right, on the other hand, and you can look forward to success and profit for a long time to come.
One thing that you absolutely must realize is the fact that an online business, just like any other business, needs sales to prosper. There’s nothing magical about doing business on the internet. It is, from a business perspective, just another medium for selling stuff to consumers.
If, like many people, selling is something that you are less than comfortable with, you need to ensure that you make the sales process as painless as possible for yourself. It also helps if you can maximize the return on your sales effort once you have made a successful conversion. With both of these factors in mind, let’s have a quick look at the type of product that you should consider promoting.
If you aren’t a natural salesman, then you will probably find it very much easier to persuade your prospects to consider something that they already use, ideally every day, rather than to convince them that they need a product that they haven’t used before.
Take a product or service that they already have or use, and probably consider essential (or unavoidable), and then show them how to save money on it. Show them how to save money when they fill up with gas by using a different credit card or loyalty card. Show them how to cut their utility bill by fitting energy saving light bulbs throughout their house. Show them how to cut their food bill by shopping somewhere other than normal.
You’re not really trying to sell them anything. You’re simply demonstrating a method by which they can save money on items that they already “admit” that they need. In other words, you’re half way to a sale before you even start.
And even if you are very comfortable with selling, it still makes sense to maximize the return on your efforts. One of the best ways to do this is to sell a product or service which needs to be renewed or replenished – or, better yet, sign up your prospect to some kind of monthly subscription type of service.
If you can get paid every time that your customer uses their new loyalty card to put gas in their car, that’s great. Perhaps you could get a commission every month once you’ve helped someone to save money on electricity or signed them up for a new cable TV service. Any of these types of sales will provide you with an ongoing, residual income and increase the return on your efforts.
In summary, don’t waste your time trying to persuade your prospects that they need something. Sell them something that they already use – and then keep selling it to them month after month.
